Walk through any market in Pakistan, or scroll through any online store, and you will see "genuine leather" written on almost everything. Some of it is real. A lot of it is PU (synthetic) or bonded leather made to look real. The difference only shows months later, when the surface starts peeling and the corners crack.
The good news: you don't need to be an expert to tell them apart. Here are seven simple checks you can do yourself.
First, know the types of leather
- Full-grain leather: the top layer of the hide, with its natural surface intact. The strongest type, and it ages beautifully.
- Top-grain leather: the top layer, lightly sanded for a smoother look. Still strong and long-lasting.
- Split / "genuine" leather: a lower layer of the hide. It is real leather, but less durable than the top layers.
- Bonded leather: leather scraps glued together with a coating on top. It usually peels within a year or two.
- PU / faux leather: plastic-based material with no animal hide at all.
7 ways to check if leather is real
1. Look at the edges. Real leather shows a slightly rough, fibrous edge where it has been cut. PU usually shows a clean plastic layer on top of a fabric backing.
2. Check the surface. Real leather has small pores and tiny irregular marks, because it comes from a natural hide. If the pattern repeats perfectly, it was probably printed onto a synthetic sheet.
3. Press it. Press your thumb into the surface. Real leather wrinkles softly and the colour shifts slightly, then springs back. Synthetic material stays flat and uniform.
4. Smell it. Real leather has a rich, natural smell that is hard to fake. PU often smells of plastic or chemicals.
5. Try a drop of water. On untreated real leather, a small drop of water is slowly absorbed and darkens the spot for a moment. On PU, it just sits on top. (Do this on a hidden area.)
6. Feel the temperature and weight. Real leather warms up in your hand and has a natural weight to it. PU often feels cold, light and slightly slippery.
7. Use price as a signal. Real leather costs more to produce. If a "leather" wallet is priced far below the market, the material is very likely PU or bonded.
Buying leather online? Ask these questions

- Check that the store has a clear return policy.
- Look for a brand that states the material clearly in the product description, not vague phrases.
How to care for real leather
Keep it away from direct heat and long exposure to water. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth, and use a leather conditioner every few months. Well-cared-for leather doesn't wear out. It develops character.

Frequently asked questions
Is "genuine leather" the best quality?
No. "Genuine leather" is often used for lower grades. Full-grain and top-grain are stronger and last longer.
Does real leather peel?
Real leather doesn't peel. Peeling is a common sign of bonded leather or PU.
Can PU look exactly like leather?
From a distance, yes. But the edges, smell and feel usually give it away.
